Used vs. Certified Pre-Owned

Mechanic Going Over Checklist

Shopping for a pre-owned vehicle and wondering, “What is the difference between used and certified pre-owned?” You’re not alone. While both fall under the umbrella of “used” vehicles, CPO vehicles tend to cost more — often times for benefits Spokane Valley, WA drivers never use. Learn more about what sets CPO vs. used vehicles apart with the team at Arrotta's Automax & RV!

Buying a Used Car

Having been driven by previous drivers, used vehicles vary in terms of model year, mileage, and number of previous owners. For this reason, they’re priced at a lower cost than both new vehicles and certified pre-owned models — we even have used cars under $20,000 and under $10,000 for sale in Spokane. The benefit isn’t just in lower prices — when you buy used, your car has already depreciated, and you can expect it to keep much of the value you invest in it.

While a car with 100,000+ miles may have once been considered a big risk, advancements in technology mean that some vehicles can now last for hundreds of thousands of miles with routine maintenance and care. While mileage may not be the deal breaker it once was, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind when looking at a higher mileage vehicle:

  • Make sure to thoroughly inspect any used vehicle you’re considering.
  • Take your used vehicle for a test drive, and discuss any issues in terms of vehicle condition or performance that arise.
  • Some cars and SUVs can last more than 200,000 miles with routine care and maintenance.

Buying a CPO Car

One major difference between CPO vs. used vehicles is that for vehicles to be considered to be certified pre-owned, there are certain requirements that must be met. To be part of a CPO program, general requirements usually include:

  • Passing a multi-point inspection
  • Model year is within five years of the current model year
  • Usually less than 80,000 miles, sometimes up to 100,000 miles
  • Offered with extended warranties and/or limited powertrain warranties

Due to these standards, certified pre-owned vehicles tend to be newer and with lower mileage than used models — and come with higher prices than used cars.

CPO vehicles have a lot in common with newer cars: they have a little warranty protection, they might have low mileage, and they can often be newer. But each of those comes with a downside:

  • You’re paying for warranty protection you may never use
  • Low mileage is relative — a two-year old car with 70,000 miles could be a CPO vehicle
  • A newer vehicle means a higher price and more room to depreciate

At Arrotta's Automax & RV, we think it’s smarter for drivers to buy used and then look into additional warranty coverage if they want it. As a Spokane used car lot, we offer a variety across makes and models you won’t find when shopping for CPO.
